Albania

Albania, Kosovo and Macedonia

Where am I going next?

In a few weeks, I will be joining a small group adventure with Intrepid Travel to these countries. If you want to know more about the trip, click this link https://www.intrepidtravel.com/ca/kosovo/kosovo-albania-macedonia-explorer-143597

“It’s hard to find a patch of Europe as secluded as this one. Among the rugged mountains and green fields of Albania, Kosovo and North Macedonia there are plenty of shepherds, monasteries, lakes, valleys and Byzantine churches – what’s lacking is crowds. It’s taken decades for the Balkans to wipe away memories of conflict and communism, but (amazingly) they’ve emerged strong and smiling. From hip cafes in Skopje and the soft shores of Lake Ohrid to the mosques of picture-perfect Prizren, this 15-day adventure showcases Balkan beauty at its very best.” – the trip description.

You are probably thinking “where is that??”

As you can see in this map, these countries are just north of Greece, in the Balkans area of Europe.

What is special about the Balkan countries?

They have a long and dark history, with complex borders and conflicts. Kosovo experienced a bloody war only 25 years ago, and is one of the youngest countries in the world.

They have diverse landscapes with mountains, lakes and valleys, and wine growing regions.

The newest hotspot in the European summer is the southern Albanian coast, known as the Albanian Riviera – not part of my trip, but I have a few extra days at the end to seem some of the sights.

What will the weather be like in the Balkans?

Right now at the end of August, some of the cities have temperatures of 35C. In a few weeks, I will likely still see some very warm temperatures. I’ll be headed into the mountains though, so I’ll be prepared for cold nights.
